1.4 Wired and Wireless Networks Flashcards
What are the different types of network?
LAN(Local Area Network)
WAN(Wide Area Network)
Client-server network
Peer to peer network
Factors that effect the performance of LAN and WAN?
Bandwidth Number of users Transmission media Wireless factors Topology
What does LAN stand for and what is it?
(Local Area Network) covers a small geographical area e.g. and office
What does WAN stand for and what is it?
(Wider Area Network) WANs connect LANs together over a large geographical area e.g. school
What is a Client-server network?
Two computers in which one, the client, makes a service request from another, the server.
What is a Peer to peer network?
All of the computers in the network are equal. They connect directly to each other.
What is a Client-server network’s roles?
Hosts data and other forms of resources.
What is a Peer to peer network’s roles?
Share resources and help computers and devices work together.
What are the different types of hardware needed to connect stand alone computers to networks?
NIC(Network Interface Card) Switches Router WAP(Wireless Access Point) Cables
What is the concept of Virtual networks?
Part of a LAN or WAN where only certain devices can see and communicate with each other.
What does DNS stand fir and what is it?
(Domain Name Server) translate domain names into IP Addresses so the computer can understand.
What is Hosting?
Is the storing of files and data on a web server.
What does WAP stand for and what is it?
(Wireless Access Point) a switch that allows devices to connect wirelessly.
What does NIC stand for and what is it?
(Network Interface Card) built in hardware that allows a device to connect to a network.
What is a Router?
Transmits the data (packets) between the networks.
