STEYR DEGREES OF WEAPON READINESS (DOWR)

A

There are 4: LOAD, ACTION, INSTANT, UNLOAD

  1. LOAD: check safe, mag on
  2. ACTION: check safe, cock-lock-flick, check bolt fully forward (look at the ejection slot), check safe
  3. INSTANT: weapon up, safe off
  4. UNLOAD: (Note the “Individual safety precaution” is the same): check safe, mag off, cock, lock, NO barrel off, clear barrel (45deg down), clear body (45 deg up), parts fwd, catch-fire*-catch, put down

* always take a sight picture when pulling the trigger

STEYR IMMEDIATE ACTION DRILLS (If weapon fails to fire)

A
  1. First, whilst still at the shoulder, just ‘TILT-LOOK*’ to inspect for the open ejection port of EMPTY MAG, and if present:
    1. MAG off and DROP
    2. new MAG on,
    3. PARTS FWD and FIRE, otherwise:
  2. TILT/COCK/LOCK/LOOK**’ to seek another cause to rectify:
    1. Ammunition stoppage (fired case ejected: 1st time): parts fwd and continue
    2. Gas stoppage (fired case ejected: 2nd time): parts fwd, safe on, gas to adverse, safe off, fire
    3. Faulty Mag (rounds in mag but not fed): change it
    4. Obstruction: mag off, shake clr, mag on, parts fwd, fire (only remove barrel if necessary)
    5. Unfired round ejected: check base to see if struck:
      1. if struck, 1st time = dud round, parts fwd, continue
      2. if struck, 2nd time = dud mag: change and quarantine mag, parts fwd, go on
      3. If not struck = weapon fault eg broken firing pin: dismantle and change

  • * this is now called the SHORT IA DRILL*
  • ** this is now called the LONG IA DRILL*

STEYR FINAL FUNCTION TESTS (this is no longer tested, but should be done during reassy)

A

Tests 4 elements : CORRECT PARTS, SAFETY, SINGLE SHOT, FULL AUTO:

CORRECT PARTS: during ressembly, check:

  • 4 serials
  • piston rings staggered
  • piston travel
  • bolt rotation
  • expiry sticker

then: reassemble, fit receiver &:

  • check safe
  • check no mag
  • cock and fit barrel
  • parts fwd
  • check no mag fitted, then:

TEST SAFETY

  • SAFE ON, fire: wont

TEST _SING_LE SHOT

  • SAFE OFF, fire to single shot & hold: will
  • cycle action and release trigger: clunks as trigger resets.

TEST FULL AUTO

  • FIRE to full auto pressure and hold: will
  • cycle action and release trigger: no clunk (trigger has already reset)
  • FIRE: wont (already has)
  • apply safe (check physically and visually), put down

STEYR WHT INSTANT FAILS

A
  1. removing the master hand from the pistol grip whilst holding the weapon : this is “loss of control of the weapon”
  2. picking up by other than the sight or the body
  3. _failing to safe whilst still at the shoulde_r if carrying out an unload from the firing position (the safe is only OFF when at the shoulder, ready to fire)

THE BUDDY SYSTEM

  • was introduced after the Kovco death to reduce UDs:
  • When away from the supervised training environment, and before performing the ‘FUIs’ - Final function test - Unload drill - Individual safety precaution (= procedure to clear an unknown weapon) Members are to buddy up with someone else qualified in the weapon, who ‘OCCs’ your actions: - Observe the drill - Correct errors - Confirm weapon is CLEAR
