1.4 starch, glycogen & cellulose Flashcards
where is starch found?
plants as small grains
name the 5 features of starch & explain.
branched -> many ends for attack & reapid release of alpha-glucose
insoluble -> doesn’t affect water potential
large -> doesn’t diffuse out
coiled -> into helix, compact
hydrolysed -> into alpha-glucose for respiration
where is glycogen found?
- animal & bacterial cells (muscles & liver)
what is the difference between glycogen & starch? why?
- shorter & more branched; animals need energy release at a faster rate
which type of glucose forms starch & glycogen?
alpha-glucose
which type of glucose forms cellulose?
beta-glucose
what is the difference between starch & cellulose?
chains are straight & unbranched, parallel to each other
what is formed between adjacent chains of cellulose?
cross-links by hydrogen bonds to create a strong structure
