1.4 Starch, glycogen and cellulose Flashcards
1
Q
Where can starch be found?
A
many parts of a plant in the form of small grains especially in seeds and storage organs.
2
Q
How is starch formed?
A
Starch is manufactured in the green leaves of plants from excess glucose produced during photosynthesis.
3
Q
Why is starch important to plants?
A
It forms an important component of food and is the major energy source in most diets.
4
Q
What is starch made of?
A
Starch is made up of chains of alpha glucose monosaccharides linked by glycosidic bonds that are formed by condensation reactions.
5
Q
What is the structure of Starch?
A
Amylose : branchless form of starch
- forms a 3-D helical structure as it doesn’t have any branches
- glucose molecules are linked via alpha 1-4 glycosidic bonds
