1.2 Carbohydrates - monosaccharides Flashcards
What are organic molecules?
Molecules that contain carbon
Define monomer
one of many small molecules that combine to form a larger one known as a polymer
Define polymer
Large molecule made up of repeating smaller molecules (monomers)
What is the basic monomer in carbohydrates?
sugar/saccharide
What do you call a single, pair and many sugars?
monosaccharide, disaccharide and polysaccharides
What features do monosaccharides hold?
sweet-tasting, soluble
What is the general formula for monosaccharides?
(CH20)n
Define isomer
2 or more compounds with the same formula but different arrangement of atoms in the molecule and different properties
How do you test for reducing sugars?
Benedicts test
1. add 2cm3 of the food sample to be tested to a test tube. If the sample is not already in liquid form, first grind it up in water
- add an equal volume of Benedicts reagent
- heat the picture in a gently boiling water bath for 5 mins
- Positive test shows yellow (low), orange (moderate), brick red (high)
What is a reducing sugar?
A sugar that can donate electrons to (or reduce) another chemical.
