14 - National and international standards Flashcards
Outline the British standards institute (BSI)
- National organisation that devises standard procedures
- Currently over 30000 standards
- The BSI verification kitemark shows that the standard has been met
- British standards also accepted by European standards will have the prefix ‘BS EN’
Outline the international Organization for standardisation (ISO)
- Consists of 150 national standards bodies (including BSI)
- Implements internationally recognised standards , facilitating the access to foreign markets
- The CE mark means a product conforms to all relevant European safety standards and is mandatory for all EU sales
Name 7 directives
- Restriction of hazardous Substances (RHOS) directive
- Battery Directive
- Polymer codes for identification and recycling
- Packaging and Packaging waste directive
- Waste from Electrical and Electronic equipment (WEEE) directive
- End of Life Vehicles (ELV) directive
- Energy ratings of products
Outline the directive: Restriction of hazardous substances (ROHS)
- European directive first introduced in 2006
- Aims to prevent damage to human health and the environment
- Restricts use of hazardous materials like mercury in electronic products
Outline the directive: Battery directive
- European directive implemented in 2006
- Limits the use of hazardous substances being used in batteries
- Crossed out wheelie bin indicates the disposal method
Outline the directive: Polymer codes for identification and recycling
- Internationally recognised recycling identification symbol
Outline the directive: Packaging and packaging waste directive
- EU directive last updated in 2014
- Aims to minimise packaging material, reduce hazardous substances, and increase the use of reusable packaging
- Material identification labelling is required
Outline the directive: Waste from electronic equipment (WEEE) directive
- European directive implemented in 2006
- Crossed out wheelie bin to show disposal method
- Deals with electronic devices at the end of their lives
Outline the directive: End of life Vehicles (ELV) directive
- European directive with the aim of making the dismantling and recycling of ELV’s more environmentally friendly
Outline the directive: Energy rating of products
- Different grades will be given depending on energy efficiency
- Compulsory European scheme
Name 7 labelling initiatives
- Mobius loop recycling symbol
- European label
- NAPM recycled mark
- EC energy label
- Energy efficiency label and logo
- Forestry stewardship council (FSC) logo
- EU energy star
Outline the labelling initiative: Mobius Loop recycling symbol
- International recycling loop with 3 arrows
- Often used with a polymer ID code
- Facilitates the separation of different polymers
Outline the labelling initiative: NAPM recycled mark
- The National association of paper merchants scheme to encourage the use of recycled content in paper and card
Outline the labelling initiative: European eco label
- Voluntary certification for products life cycle assessment
Outline the labelling initiative: EC energy label
- Compulsary European scheme to indicate the energy consumption of household appliances
- Each product is rated on a scale of A+++ to D
