12 - Responsible Design Flashcards
What is the commission related to sustainable development?
The Brundtland commission
When was the Brundtland commission introduced?
1987
What are 4 considerations a designer should consider for responsible design?
- How to conserve materials
- How to make products that are as environmentally friendly as possible
- The carbon footprint (both primary and secondary)
- Product miles
What is a primary carbon footprint?
- The direct C02 emissions caused by a product
What is a secondary carbon footprint?
- The indirect C02 emissions of a product
What are the three strands of sustainable development?
- Social
- Economic
- Environmental
Outline 3 Economic aspects of sustainable development
- Material costs
- Processing implications, such as energy cost or costs related to dealing with pollution
- Manufacturing costs
Outline 2 social aspects of sustainable development
- Processing implications, such as impact of processes on workers health
- Good manufacturing conditions
Outline 2 environmental aspects of sustainable development?
- Material use, and the use of finite resources
- Processing implications such as energy use
What is sustainable development?
Development that meets the needs of the current generations without compromising the needs of future generations
What is a socio-economic advantage of renewable energy?
- Renewable energy projects can create jobs and increase local services in an area
State 2 advantages of renewable energy?
- Renewable energy facilities generally require less maintenance than traditional generators
- It is sustainable and will never run out
What are 4 disadvantages of renewable energy?
- Can be difficult to generate the large quantities of electricity that are produced by traditional fossil fuel generators
- Often relies on the weather which can be unreliable
- Cannot usually be stored in large quantities for later use
- Currently more expensive than traditional fossil fuel or nuclear energy due to the large costs of new technologies
What is a circular economy?
- An approach that anticipates and designs for biological and technical ‘nutrients’ to be continuously re used at the same quality
- This reduces the dependency on sourcing new materials
What are the two types of ‘Nutrients’ in a circular economy?
- Biological
- Technical
