1.4 Microscope Flashcards
what is a microscope?
a device that produces magnified images and structures that are too small to see with the unaided eye
light microscopes produce…
magnified images by focusing visible light rays
- produce clear images of objects at a magnification of 1000x
compound light microscopes…
allow light to pass through the specimen and use 2 lenses to form and image
electron microscopes…
use beams of electrons to produce magnified images
- used to see even smaller objects
- magnifies 1000x more than light microscopes (1,000,000)
- ONLY used to see non-living preserved cells/tissues
biologists use two main types of electron microscopes:
TEM transmission electron microscope 2D
SEM scanning electron microscope 3D
how do scientists prep non-living preserved cells/ tissues
by dehydrating and preserving
TEM microscopes
cell structures and large protein molecules
- MUST BE cut into ultra thin slices
SEM microscopes
gives 3D images of cells
- DO NOT have to be cut in thin slices
