1.4 Enzymes Flashcards

1
Q

What are enzymes

A

They are biological catalysts
This means they speed up reactions in our cells whilst being unchanged by reactions and can be reused

Q

How many substrates fit into the active site of an enzyme

A

Only one substrate fits into the active site of an enzyme
Like a lock and key

Q

Stages of enzyme reactions

A

1) The enzyme is there
2) The substrate binds to the enzymes active site
3) Enzyme reactions occurs and products are formed. Products will leave the active site and the enzyme can be reused

Q

What is optimum

A

Enzyme activity is best and most active when it’s at its optimum ph or temperature

Q

What is denatured

A

Enzymes become denatured at high temperatures
It means the shape of the enzyme changed and is no longer complimentary to its specific substrate. This slows down or completely stops the enzyme activity
