What is a clause
A clause is a group of words that contain a verb and its subject. There can be more than one clause in a sentence.
Main/Subordinate Clause
A main clause makes sense by itself.
A subordinate clause needs the main clause to make sense.
For Example:
‘(Sophie bought a dress) (because she liked the colour.’)
Liked and bought are the verbs and
Sophie and She are the subjects.
Underline the main cause.
1-Niamh ate a large green apple that she had purchased from the store.
2-Jack, trying hard not to laugh, helped his father down the stairs.

What is a Phrase?
A phrase is a a group of words that don’t contain a subject and a verb. Eg-Along the road, behind the tree.
Phrases can’t stand alone but when added to sentences they give them more meaning.
Is it a phrase or a sentence.
It was terribly hot (S)
A big problem (P)
She was amazing (S)
