14-1 Flashcards
what is the Earth also referred to as?
the Blue Planet and the water planet
how much of the earth’s surface is covered by the world’s ocean?
71%
what is oceanography?
science that uses geology, chemistry, physics, and biology to study all the aspects of the world ocean
what are the four main ocean basins?
pacific, atlantic, indian, arctic
describe the pacific ocean
largest, deepest, more than half of ocean surface, world’s largest single geographic feature
describe the atlantic ocean
½ the size of Pacific, not as deep, narrow
describe the indian ocean
slightly smaller than Atlantic, same depth, majority is in the Southern Hemisphere
describe the arctic ocean
7% size of Pacific, little more than ¼ as deep as the rest
what is bathymetry?
measurement of ocean depths and charting of the ocean floor, HMS Challenger
what is sonar?
Sound Navigation and Ranging, sound waves to calculate distance to an object. If ocean is shallow, sound waves return quickly, deep it takes longer, using speed of sound they calculate depth.
what is a multibeam sonar?
new version of sonar, uses more than one sound source and listening device
what are satellites?
uses radar to compute distance to ocean’s surface, distance calculated using radar speed and time it takes for signal to be reflected back
what are submersibles?
small underwater crafts for deep-sea research
Used to collect data about areas of the ocean unreachable by humans, many instruments
