What is the Hypocentre?
A
The point within the ground where the energy stored is released.

P (primary) waves
A
P waves move back and forth in the direction and travel. They arrive before secondary waves at seismic recording stations They travel through the earth at speeds of 8km/second.

S (secondary) waves
A
S waves shake the ground perpendicular to the direction of travel. These waves shake the earth. They travel through the earth at 4km/second.

L (love) waves
A
L waves travel from side to side with vibrations occuring at the horizontal plain. They have high amplitude.
