1.2C Flashcards
What is the Benioff Zone?
Its is an area of seismicity corresponding with the slab being thrust downwards in a Subduction zone. The different speeds and movements of the rock at this point produce numerous earthquakes. This is where medium/deep-focused earthquakes.
How does Palaeomagnetism work?
Palaeomagnetism results from the zone of magma striking the Earths magnetic polarity when it cools. Scientists can use this tool to determine historic periods of large scale tectonic activity. Then create a geo-timeline.
What are Subduction zones ?
Broad areas where 2 plates move together, often with the thinner, more dense oceanic plate descending beneath the less dense thicker continental plate.
Define a locked fault?
A fault which is not slipping due to the frictional resistance being larger than the stress across the fault, making it stuck.
