What is a mantle plume?
A
An area beneath the crust, where magma is hotter than surrounding magma.

What is a Hotspot?
A
An area in the mantle from which the heat rises as a hot thermal plume from deep in the earth. High heat and lower pressure at the base of the lithosphere enable melting of the rock. This molten material (magma)rises through cracks and erupts as volcanoes.
