How does the process of cracking work?

Long-chain hydrocarbons are not convenient for things such as making desiel, kerosene or petrol therefore the cracking process needs to break those long-chain hydrocarbons into small-chain hydrocarbons which will allow you to make and use things such as diesel, kerosene and petrol at gas stations.
