13.3 What Are Some Benefits And Risks Asociated With The Applications Of Electrical System? Flashcards
What are the 3 main effects of electric current? (+)
Chemical effect
Heating effect
Magnetic effect
What are 2 harmful effects of electricity?
Electric fire (overloading)
Electric shock
What are 2 safety devices in our household electrical system?
Fuse
Circuit breaker
What does a fuse do
Fuse protects the electrical appliance from excessive current
(electrical appliances have limits to the maximum amount of current that flows through it so it can operate safely)
What is the current rating of fuse
Current rating of fuse indicates maximum amount of current that can flow through the fuse before the wire inside it melts
Where are fuses found in
Fuses are found in three-pin plugs
How a fuse works (3 steps)
- (Due to an electrical fault in an appliance), current that flows through is larger than the current rating of fuse -> causes a thin wire inside the fuse to melt
- circuit becomes open, no current able to flow through appliance
- after fault in appliance is corrected, damaged fuse needs to be replaced before appliance can be used again
What is RCCB
Residual Current Circuit Breaker
How does the RCCB work?
Many individual lever-like switches
Connected to different parts of a household circuit
When current flowing is too large due to faulty electrical appliance, switch linked to appliance trips and cuts off the current
(Prevents electric shocks)
Can be reactivated (after faulty appliance is replaced/repaired)
