1.3 - Types of Computer Systems Flashcards
What are the computer system types?
Desktop, tablet, laptop, smartphone, embedded systems, quantum, mainframe
What are tablet/phone uses?
Second screen for a PC, eReader, remote control
What are the benefits of tablets?
Less weight than a laptop, smaller in size, portable, long battery life
What are the disadvantages of tablets?
Touchscreen typing not as quick/accurate, screen size smaller than a laptop, does not come with optical drives (CD, DVD, and Blu-Ray)
What are desktop/server uses?
Email management, document editing, multimedia consumption
What are the benefits of desktops?
Higher specs at a cheaper price, higher resolution, great for graphic designers and office jobs, versatile
What are the disadvantages of desktops?
Bulky - can’t move them, high power usage
What are embedded system uses?
Small computer system installed within a larger device e.g. washing machine, traffic light, car
What are the benefits of embedded systems?
Low power consumption, performs a specific task, cheap
What are the disadvantages of embedded systems?
Hardware limitations, limited memory, power supply reliability - less durable
What are mainframe uses?
High performance computer used for large-scale purposes: scientific engineering problems, complex calculations, weather forecasting/scientific simulations, banks/airlines
What are the benefits of mainframes?
Process large amounts of data, reliable and secure - large backup capabilities, high processing power
What are the disadvantages of mainframes?
Very expensive - only used by organizations that need to process large amounts of data quickly
What are quantum uses?
Experimental and in development, improve research + development - drug discovery, useful for global challenges e.g. renewable energy, AI, solve complex problems by using quantum physics
What are the benefits of quantum systems?
Improve efficiency - can process large data sets, solve complex problems faster
