A
- mature and complete statement of Paul’s theology (but it doesn’t include some things in other letters)
- paul wants to plant a chruch in Rome and this is introduction (but there is already a church in rome established before him, he normally establishes churches in places with none)
- there is division in the church in Rime and Paul writes to bring unity, (but this does not explain the entirety of the letter)

- paul hopes the church in rome will play a key role in his future missionary plans moving westward
- to prepare it, he provides it with a “big picture” perspective of the outworking of God’s righteous purposes for His people and His world
- concerned that the mainly gentile church in rome may be tempted to set aside matters to do with God’s work in and through the people of Israel
- recent events in rome such as the expulsion of jews by emperor cluadius might have resulted in them wanting distance from the jewish way of life or see themsleves as superior
- that’s why pushing big picture, main theme is God’s worldwide purposes through the death and resurrection of Jesus which rescues and renews Israel and the whole world

- God’s own redeeming covenent faithfulness -> Jesus -> Spirit -> believers’ faithfulness (more than typical protestant of just people being faithful)

why is paul not ashamed of the gospel 4

- it contains the power of God yo save/rescue all who believe, Jew first and also gentile
- in it, the righteousness of God is revealed
- “through faith for faith” perhaps meaning something like “from God’s faithfulness revealed in Jesus’ faithfulness, seen in the believers Spirit-empowered faithfulness”
- it is by being faithful that the righteous will experience true life even now and ultimately so
