1.3 : Membrane Structure Flashcards
1
Q
what are glycoproteins?
A
a polysaccharide (or large sugar - oligosaccharide) attached to a protein.
2
Q
what are glycolipids?
A
a polysaccharide (or large sugar - oligosaccharide) attached to a lipid.
3
Q
what are integral proteins?
A
proteins embedded in the lipid bilayer.
4
Q
what are peripheral proteins?
A
proteins attached to the surface of the lipid bilayer.
5
Q
what can glycoproteins and glycolipids act as?
A
identifiers of cells.
6
Q
what is the evidence for the fluid mosaic model?
A
- cell contents flow out when cell surface is ruptured = barrier membrane present.
- water soluble compounds enter cells easier than compounds that dissolve in lipids = lipids are major component.
- in attempt to extract proteins from plasma membrane, some on the external surface where easier extracted, others were traversed in the membrane and were harder to extract.
