13. Geographic Skills Flashcards
What is weather?
Weather is the state of the atmosphere over an area at a particular time
What are meteorologists?
Meteorologists study temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind and moisture to produced weather maps and charts.
What are weather charts known as?
synoptic charts
What is an isobar?
An isobar is a line on a weather map that connects points of equal atmospheric pressure.
What units of measure are used to measure atmospheric pressure?
Millibars
What are closely grouped isobars an indication of?
Closely grouped isobars are an indication of strong winds
What are loosely spaced isobars an indication of?
loosely spaced isobars
results in slack or light winds.
What is the most predominant wind in an area called?
Prevailing wind
What are Ireland’s prevailing winds?
South westerlies
What is an air mass?
An air mass is a large volume of air in the atmosphere that has consistent characteristics of temperature and moisture
What are the main air masses that influence irelands weather called?
Polar Maritime, Artic Maritime, Tropical Maritime, Tropical Continental and Polar Continental
What is a weather front?
A weather front is the boundary zone between two air masses:
What is a warm front?
– occurs where a warm air mass is advancing and it is forced to rise above the cold air mass in front of it. Brings steady, continuous rain or drizzle.
- Semi-circular shapes on weather map
What is a cold front?
occurs where a cold air mass is advancing and pushes under the warm air mass in front of it. Brings heavy rain showers/downpours.
- Triangular shapes on weather maps
What is an occluded front?
– occurs where a cold front overtakes a warm air mass and pushes it upwards so that there is no warm air remaining at ground level.
- both semicircular and triangular shapes on weather map
Lines on a weather map joining places of equal pressure
Isobars
Lines on a weather map joining places of equal temperature
Isotherms
Lines on a weather map joining places of equal sunshine
Isohels
Lines on a weather map joining places of equal sunshine
Isohyets
Lines on a weather map joining places of equal wind speed
Isotachs
Lines on a weather map joining places of equal cloud cover
Isonephs
What does a capital H stand for on a weather chart?
High pressure system or anticyclone
Characteristics of summer anticyclones
- Few or no clouds.
Strong sunshine will make it hot - Light winds
- Cooling of ground leading to morning mist
- Warm moist air rising from the ground forming thunderstorms
Characteristics of winter anticyclones
- Cloudless skies
- Temperature drop, making the days cold and the nights even colder due to lack of cloud cover
- Fog and frost forming at night
What does a capital L stand for on a weather map?
Low pressure system or depression
What do low pressure systems bring?
- Windy and unsettled weather
• Cloudy conditions
• Periods of heavy rain and
inclement/changeable bad weather.
Winter snow
•Fronts are associated with cyclones or
depressions
