Q

What is overpopulation?

A

occurs when the number of people in a region is too great to be supported by the available natural resources. Overpopulation does not necessarily depend on population density – the Netherlands has an average population density of 500 people per km2 and yet it is not overpopulated.

Q

What is under-population?

A

occurs when there are too few people in a region to exploit the resources of that region. Today, examples include Western Australia and the interior of Canada, where large mineral resources exist. Ireland was under-populated at the beginning of the 1990’s – Celtic Tiger. In- migration made up for the shortage in labour.
