13 Coordination and Response Flashcards
1
Q
What does the Central nervous system consist of?
A
the brain and spinal cord
2
Q
What does the peripheral nervous system consist of?
A
nerves and receptors outside the brain
3
Q
Role of a nervous system
A
coordinates and regulates body functions
4
Q
What is a reflex action?
A
A reflex action is an automatic action which rapidly integrates and coordinates stimuli with the responses of receptors
5
Q
What is a synapse?
A
The junction between two neurons. It ensures that impulses travel in one direction only.
6
Q
Adaptation of a neurone
A
- Long axon to transmit impulses faster
- Many dendrons to pick up electrical signals from other neurons
- Myelin sheath insulates nerve fibres allowing electrical impulses to travel faster
7
Q
What occurs at a synapse?
A
- An impulse stimulates vesicles to release neurotransmitter molecules into the synaptic cleft
- Neurotransmitter molecules diffuse across the gap where they bind with receptor proteins on the next neurone
- An impulse is then stimulated in the next neurone
