What do we use as the primary connection type for most mobile devices? What do we use it for?
USB - Universal Serial Bus. High speed connection, usually plugged into computer or the charger.
What are the most common USB types for phone inputs?
USB A, USB C and Micro USB.
What is Apple’s proprietary connection type? What are its advantages over Micro USB?
8-pin digital signal, Lightning cable. Faster charging, can be plugged in either way.
What are the advantages of USB-C?
Smaller, can be plugged in either way, can be used for multiple signals.
What kinds of signals can be sent via USB-C?
DisplayPort, HDMI, ThunderBolt
What is a common pre-USB serial interface, and what signals did they transmit?
DB-9 (sometimes known as a DE-9), and they transmitted RS-232 signals.
What does NFC stand for, and what does it do? What are some real world examples?
Near-field communication. It is used to transfer small amounts of data between devices that are close to one another. Used in tap-to-pay at stores and train stations, authentication, transferring data between mobile devices, etc.
What is Bluetooth used for?
High speed communication over short distances in a Personal Area Network (PAN). Used for audio, etc.
What are the benefits of using a mobile hotspot?
Any device that connects to it can connect to the internet via 802.11 access. Helpful for devices with only an 802.11 connection or when there is no public access point available.
What is a stylus, and what are its benefits?
A touchscreen/capacitive pen with which you can provide input into a screen. Emulates a real-world pen, or pencil.
What is an active/digital stylus? What are the benefits and drawbacks?
A stylus that communicates independently with the device even when they are not touching. Benefits: more precise, additional functionality. Drawback: not universal. Example: Apple Pencil.
What is a drawing pad?
An external digitizer that can be used with an active stylus across devices, independent of OS. E.g., your Wacom tablet.
What is a trackpad?
A built in device that replaces a mouse on a laptop.
What is a headset?
A device with both a microphone and earphones.
What is a TRRS connection? What’s the benefit?
An analog audio jack for headsets/audio devices. Commonly known as a 3.5mm input. Stands for “tip-ring-ring-sleeve”, for some reason. Benefit: can separate incoming from outgoing audio.
