1.3 Aquatic Biomes Flashcards
littoral zone
emergent plants grow along the shoreline, abounds in invertebrates
benthic zone
located at the bottom of the water body, often is muddy, rich in detritus and nutrients, and low in oxygen
limnetic zone
a layer of open, sunlit water, where photosynthesis takes place, supports phytoplankton and zooplankton
profundal zone
sunlight does not reach the deeper profundal zone, lacks photosynthetic life and is lower in dissolved oxygen than the upper waters
What fresh aquatic biome are the best in terms of plant productivity, biodiversity, and holding more nutrients?
Marshes and swamps
What marine aquatic biome has the highest primary productivity and biodiversity?
Coral reefs and estuaries
What are aquatic biomes characterized by?
Salinity, depth, and temperature
What happens when organisms die in aquatic biomes?
biomass sinks to the bottom of the ocean where decomposers utilize nutrients
What brings nutrients from the depths of the ocean to the surface for phytoplankton?
upwelling
Where is there an abundance in nitrogen and phosphorous amounts?
Greater along the coastline as a result of runoff into rivers and eventually estuaries
