2.2 Ecosystem Services Flashcards
Provisioning Ecosystem Service
goods that are directly taken from ecosystems or made from natural resources
Regulating Ecosystem Service
Natural ecosystems that regulated climate/air quality, reducing storm damage and health care costs
Supporting Ecosystem Service
Natural ecosystems that support processes that we do ourselves more efficiently and at a lower cost
Cultural Ecosystem Service
money generated bt recreation (parks, camping tours) or scientific knowledge
Ecosystem Services
Goods that come from natural resources or services/functions that ecosystems carry out that have measurable economic/financial value to humans
What are the disruptions of provisioning services?
overharvesting, water pollution, clearing land for agriculture or urbanization
What are the disruptions for regulating services?
deforestation
What are the disruptions for supporting services?
pollination habitat loss, filling in wetlands for development
What are the disruptions for cultural services?
pollution, deforestation, and urbanization
What consists of provisioning services?
food, water, raw materials (wood) and natural medicines
What consists of regulation services?
flood regulation (wetlands sponge), climate regulation (storing carbon), and water purification
What consists of cultural service?
recreation/physical/mental health, educational/scientific knowledge, aesthetic value, spiritual importance
What consists of supporting ecocystem services?
pollination, biogeochemical cycles, soil formation, photosynthesis, and water/nutrient cycling
What are human disruptions to ecosystems?
- ) ecological (affects nature) - loss of biodiversity & loss of habitat
- ) economic ($ based consequences for people) - loss of resources and regulating services
anthropogenic
man-made disasters caused by human action/inaction
