1.2c Flashcards

Q

What is an Earthquake

A

Ground shaking caused by shockwaves coming from a sudden slip on a fault.

When plates move against each other they stick causing huge amounts of pressure to build up. When pressure becomes too much, the rock fractures along cracks called faults and energy is released as seismic waves which causes ground to shake

What is the Focus

A

Point inside crust from which strain is released (hypocentre in
US. Sends earthquake/seismic waves in all directions.

Q

Divergent and Conservative Focus Depth

A

Shallow Focus Earthquakes

Tend to be (0-33km deep) as neither of these plates have subduction.

Q

Collision Margins Focus Depth

A

Approximately 0-100km deep as continental lithosphere cannot descend too deep as they are the same densities

Intermediate focus

Q

Convergent Boundaries Focus Depth

A

Greatest depth focus. Particularly deep at oceanic/oceanic areas such as Pacific & Indo- Australian where they can be 700km deep.

Benioff Zone is an area of deep seismicity due to a plate being thrust deep down.
