• the RS transfers o2 from the environment into lungs
• gas exchange occurs @ alveoil/capillary interface and diffused into the bloodstream
• o2 combines with haemoglobin on the red blood cells and is transported to heart and muscles via arteries
• o2 enters muscles via difusion where it is used for energy. co2 is diffused back into blood to be removed
• c02 travels via veins and heart back to the lungs where it is diffused into the alveoli and then expired
