Gillick competence is the whole reason for the competency
- Must review it
- The law regards young people aged 16 or over to be adults for the purposes of consent to treatment and right to confidentiality. However, a Gillick competent child refers to a patient under 16 who has sufficient understanding of their treatment allowing them to give or withhold consent. If you decide that a child is Gillick competent, you can refuse to share details with their guardian. However, it’s good practice to encourage the child to involve parents or other legal guardians in any treatment.

- Answer -If he is Gillick competent with regard to having a sight test unaccompanied, then you must respect his wishes regarding confidentiality.NB It would be a good idea to check that he is willing and able to pay for his contact lens fitting appointment if mum is not going to pay.
