12.2 Flashcards
Explain Mendel’s Principle of Independent Assortment.
o Alleles of each gene assort independently
o Because homologous chromosomes align on the metaphase plate during meiosis I independently of one another
Compare the segregation of alleles for different genes with the behavior of different homologues in meiosis.
o Alleles assort independently
o The independent alignment of diff homologous chromosome pairs from the F1 generation during metaphase I leads to the independent segregation of the different allele pairs
Explain the rule of addition and the rule of multiplication.
o Addition: “or”- probablility of two MUTUALLY EXLUSIVE events
probability of obtaining Pp (1/4), PLUS probability of obtaining pP (1/4).
¼ + ¼ = ½.
o Multiplication: Probability of 2 independent events both occurring is the product of their individual probabilities
Probablility of getting p from father: ½, prob. Of getting p from mother:½
½ x ½ = ¼
