Compare and contrast the writings of Smith and Bradford?
Smith’s purpose was to persuade others to settle here while Bradford’s purpose was to inform by providing an annual updates. Both men gave God credit for His help. Smith somewhat boasted of himself while Bradford was more humble. Bradford has more scriptures and biblical allusions than Smith.
What were the topics of the two poems by Bradstreet and what were their main ideas?
Her husband: she expresses her affection for him. Her burned house: She consoles herself about this loss by thinking of her permanent heavenly home.
Compare and contrast Knight’s and Byrd’s journals?
Knight’s journal was written for Americans, and it was designed to inform by revealing customs and differences. Bryd wrote for the British audience, and it was designed more to amuse, esp. his tall tales. Knight had more to say about religion and various groups. Byrd focused mainly on those in his survey party. Both have an eye for details as well as an understanding of human character.
How did Edwards use structure, metaphors, and rhetorical devices to persuade listeners to repent?
Edwards opening is designed to make us feel uncomfortable since we are hell-bound except for God’s pleasure. Our wickedness makes us heavy as lead assuring our downfall. God’s wrath is then compared to a flood, a bow, and a fire, over which we are dangled much like an insect, while God abhors us, which is 1000 times great than our hate for snakes. There is nothing, nothing, nothing to save you. Time is short so you must now avail yourself of the open door which Jesus provides. Join others who are being saved and escape from your Sodom!
What were four pieces of advice that Mather gave to parents in raising their children for God?
Talk about Jesus, sermon, lessons. Pray for them and have them write a prayer. Talk of sin when they’re ill. Have them learn Scriptures. Challenge to see what they are doing or how they can help. Etc.
What is the rhetorical triangle, how do the three parts relate to each other, and what was one other aspect of the rhetorical situation according to Roskelly?
The parts are audience, speaker, and message. The audience affects the kind of message and rapport may have to be gained if they oppose the speaker. The speaker’s credibility with the audience is important and his message should involve his character as well as fit his audience. Rosekelly stressed the context for the triangle and well as the speaker’s purpose or aim (the speaker is trying to influence the audience in some way).
The 7 C’s of argumentation are:
consider the situation,
clarify your thinking,
construct a claim (position, of fact, of value, of policy),
collect evidence
consider key objections (develop counter arguments),
craft your argument (appeals, evidence),
confirm your claim (restatement,
