12. Transplantation and Pregnancy Flashcards
Transplantation
Transfer of a tissue or organ from its original anatomic location to a different one
Graft
The transplanted organ or tissue
Donor
The organism that the graft is derived from
Recipient/host
The organism the graft is moved into
Tissue incompatibility
The graft is identified as non-self by the immune system of the host
Tissue rejection
The graft is destroyed and/or separated from the host’s body by the host immune system
Syngraft/isograft
Transplantation between identical twins
Autograft
Transplantation within an individual
Allograft
Transplantation in the same species but different individual
Xenograft
Transplantation between species
Host versus graft reaction (HVG)
An immune response mounted by the hosts immune system against a graft that is recognized as non-self
Graft versus host reaction (GVH)
An immune response initiated by graft-derived immune cells that were transferred into hosts body along with the graft. These cells recognize the host as non-self
When does GVHD usually occur? Target organs?
Typically occurs within 100 days after transplantation. Skin, liver and GI affected
What can happen if we have a lean towards Th1 cells during pregnancy?
Rejection is more frequent
What is apheresis?
Harvesting stem cells from peripheral blood
