When is castration indicated?
- Poor genetics
- When masculine behaviour becomes intolerable
- When we want a taller horse -> delays the closure of the growth plates
At which age would we perform castration?
Sport horse = yearling
Adult stallion = when fully grown, 3-4 years old
Pre operative for castration:
- AB, either IV or IM
- Tetanus booster i already vaccinated,
if not -> antitoxine IM
Which different techniques exist for castration?
- Standing: Open procedure
- General anaesthesia: Closed/half closed or primary closure of the vaginal trunk
Open procedure, castration:
Open up the vaginal trunk, stays open
Closed, half closed, castration:
Scrotal/inguinal approach. We crush the M.cermaste and the ligament - The recommended technique
Primary closure of the vaginal trunk, castration:
Inguinal approach.
Open the vaginal tunic, we remove the testivle + epididymus. We do ligatures and close
Instruments of castration and what they do:
- Emasculator = Crush and cut
- Sand forecps = Crush
For castration, how much lidocaine would you inject into each testicle?
10 ml in each
