10. Examination of the oral cavity, teeth, sinuses and oesophagus with different disorders Flashcards
Teeth types in horses:
- Incisors
- Canines
- Premolars
- Molars
Dental tissues:
- Enamel
- Dentin
- Cementum
What is the enamel?
- Most dense and hardest tissue of the whole body
- More than 9% is mineral content
What is the dentin?
- Forms the majority of the dental tissue
- Softer and more flexible than enamel
- Help to prevent cracks in the enamel
What is the cementum?
- Bone-like calcified tissue
- Blood supply
- Covering the root only
- Enamel
- Dentine
- Pulp cavity
- Cementum
- Root canal
The teeth are numbered, what is the number for the upper left?
200
The teeth are numbered, what is the number for the upper right?
100
The teeth are numbered, what is the number for the lower left?
300
The teeth are numbered, what is the number for the lower right?
400
How many teath on each side on the upper and lower jaw?
Upper: 11
Lower: 11
How many incisoris?
3
How many canine?
1
How many premolars?
3 ( + 1 wolf tooth)
How many molars?
3
Signs of dental problems:
- Dysphagia
- Quidding
- Weight loss
- Facial swelling
- Difficulties with riding
How to examine teeth:
- Visual inspecton
- Feeding behaviour
- X-ray
- Check number of teeths, occlusions gums
Absence of teeth
Oligodontia
More teeth present:
Polydontia
Oligodontia, which teeth are mostly affected?
incisors and molars
Polydontia, which teeth are mostly affected?
Incisors more often than premolars and molars
Name common disorders/problems that can arrise in the teeths:
- Maleruption
- Retained deciduous teeth
- Trauma
- Cheek teeth abnormalities
- Oral and dental tumours
- Displacement of teeth
- Offset bite: not horizontal bite
- Parrot mouth: the upper jaw is in front of the lower
- Sow mouth: The lower jaw is in front of the upper
Name some examples of trauma to the oral cavity
- Fracture of the mandible
- Dental fractures
Name some abnormalities of cheek teeth:
- Diastema
- Pulpitis
- Overgrowth
What is diastema?
Gap between adjacent teeth. Have both closed and open
Closed: Narrow opening and bigger gap at gum level
Open: Gap is the same width at top and bottom
What is pulpitis?
Inflammation of pulp, bacterial penetration
Cause of pulpitis:
Trauma, abresion
Treatment of pulpitis:
Mild cases: endodontic (root canal) treatment
Severe cases: Tooth extraction
Treatment of pulpitis:
Mild cases: endodontic (root canal) treatment
Severe cases: Tooth extraction
How to examine the sinsuses?
- Inspection, oral examination
- Palpation
- Percussion
- x-ray
X-ray for sinuses:
LL: Midway between the orbit and lateral opening of infraorbital canal, 2.5 cm dorsal to facial crest
VD: midline horizontal rami of the mandible, at the lvel of the caudal and mid-third border
DV: saggital plane, between the orbit and foramen infraorbitale
Endoscopy of sinuses:
Through apertura nasomaxillary
Disorders/diseases of sinuses:
- Sinusitis
- Cyst: rare, more in young horses
- Neoplasia
