12 - Speed Calculation - Mbps vs MBps Flashcards
speeds and file size clarified
Bits measure ?
big or small - b ?
Speed - bits measure speed
Mbps = small b means bits
Bytes measure ?
big or small - b ?
File size
MBps = big B - and is incorrectly & confusingly used when measuring download speed
Bits - how many bits in
1 - Kilobit
1 - Megabit
1 - Gigabit
“Bits”
1 Kilobit = 1000 bits
1 Megabit = 1 million bits
1 Gigabit = 1 Billion bits
Kilobit - how many Kilobits in
1 - Megabit
1 - Gigabit
1 Megabit has = 1000 kilobits (1000 kilobit is 1Million bits)
1 Gigabit has = 1000,000 Kilobits (1M Kilobit is 1Billion bits)
how to calculate speed from file size ?
whats the 1st step ?
If the speed is explained/given in bytes we multiply by 8 to get bits per second speed.
(simplified, & spelled out below)
File size is in bytes to convert it into bits we have to multiply it by 8. Why ? = there is - 8 bits in a byte
how to calculate speed from file size ?
e. g
- the file size is 10MB (megabytes)
- the line speed is 100Mbps (megabits)
First convert Bytes into bits using formula (Bytes x 8 =)
10 x 8 = 80 80bits, 10MB converted into bits
so if the speed is 100 megabits sent within 1 second,
Then it will send this file just under 1 second ( actual answer is 0.8 )
80 bits divided by 100(linespeed) = 0.8
( the line can send 100 megabits within 1 second, the file size is 10 MegaBytes which we converted into bits
((not megabit as you need thousand bit to make a kb & a million to make a Mb 80bits falls short of kb & Mb)).
That means 80 bits can be sent just below 1 second.)
how to calculate speed from file size ?
Another example
5GB file size
Line speed 100Mbps
- Make 1.5Gb into megaByte (its still a file size) = 1500MB. This makes it easier to make into bits
- 1500 MB convert into bits - 1500 x 8 = 12000
- 12000 divided by line speed (which is 100) = 120 seconds (2 mins)
Megabit - how many Megabit in
1 - Gigabit
10 - Gigabit
100 - Gigabit
1 Gigabit has = 1000 Megabit
10 Gigabit has = 10,000 Megabit
100 Gigabit has = 100,000 (one hundred thousand)
10 Mbps
100 Mbps
1000 Mbps = 1GB
2000 Mbps = 2GB
10,000 Mbps = 10GB
20,000 Mbps = 20GB
File Size - Picturing file size and its ruler
- One Byte = One Character or letter
- Kilobyte = page
- Megabyte = Book
- Gigabyte = video
- One Byte = One Character or letter
- Kilobyte = 1000 (technically 1024)
- Megabyte = 1 Million
- Gigabyte = 1 Billion
What is the Formula ?
If the File size is in GB - then ?
File-size ~ converted into Bits(by x 8) = Answer is Divided by Line speed = ( Final answer is given in seconds )
If file size is GB
- Multiply by 1000 to get Megabit ( to make it easier )
- Then do the usual by multiplying by 8 to make it into bits
