1.2-Performance characteristics of metals Flashcards
Sheet stock form
large sections of metalin varying thicknesses from less than 1mm to approximately 4mm
Plate stock form
thicker than 3mm and narrower than sheet metals
Bar stock form
solid form, flat bar, square bar, round bar or hexagonal bar
Tube form stock form
hollow in cross section and can be square, rectangular, round, or hexagonal
Structural angular stock form
Shapes such as H beams, L beams, I beams, tee bar and channel
Characteristics of metal
- naturally occurring material
- 25% of earth’s crust made of metal ores
- bauxite is the main one
- raw material is extracted from the ore through a combinatiom of crushing, smelting or heating, with the addition of chemicals and energy
- most metals can be recycled
Copper ore
Chalcopyrite
Aluminium ore
Bauxite
Tin ore
Cassiterite
Zinc ore
Zinc blende
3 categories of metals
- ferrous- contains iron and carbon
- non ferrous- no iron
- alloy- made of two or more metals or combining two or more elements
Non ferrous metal ALUMINIUM- properties and uses
- lightweight
- ductile
- malleable
- drinks cans, baking foil
Non ferrous metal COPPER- properties and uses
- corrosion resistant, good electricl and thermal conductor
- electrical wire, water pipes
Non ferrous metal ZINC- properties and uses
- low melting point, good corrosion resistance
- galvanising steel as protective coating for buckets
Non ferrous metal SILVER- properties and uses
- malleable, ductile, corrosion resistamt
- jewellery, cutlery
