1.2-Performance characterisics of papers and boards Flashcards
What are paper stock forms
- sizes from A0 to A8
- each A size is half the size of the previous one (e.g. A4 is half the size of A3)
Why do commercial printers use ‘paper untrimmed sizes’
they are larger than the standard A sizes and allow for colour bleeding
What is grams per square metre (gsm)
the measure of paper thickness; the lower the gsm, the more lightweight the paper
What is a complaint material
One that can be scored, folded and cut with basic tooling to form items such as nets for packaging
Where does paper came from
wood pulp (grey in colour and makes paper easy to recycle)
Layout paper- properties and uses
- thin translucent paper with a smooth surface
- sketching, quick ink
Cartridge paper- properties and uses
- off white paper, usually with a textured surface
- sketching, rendering
Tracing paper- properties and uses
- translucent paper
- copying images when sketching
Bleed proof paper- properties and uses
- similar to cartridge but colours do not run
- spirit based marker rendering
Treated paper- properties and uses
- plain paper with a clear binder or dye layer applied
- photographic printing
Watercolour paper- properties and uses
- available in absorbent, smooth, hot pressed or the more textured cold pressed and heavily textured rough
- photographic printing
Corrugated card- properties and uses
- usually with carton board outer layers and corrugated middle layer, giving the material the ability to provide protection against impact
- protective packaging, model making
Corrugated card- properties and uses
- usually with a carton board outer layer and a corrugated middle layer, so the material provides protection against impact
- protective packaging, model making
Bleached card- properties and uses
- chemically treated to brighten the surface to make it suitable for high quality printing
- greeting cards
Mount board- properties and uses
- made from compressed fine cotton fibres to produce a rigid board
- presenting artwork
