1.2 Intro To Evolution Flashcards
Natural Selection
A process by which certain organisms have traits that are better adapted to an environment and are able to survive longer
Trait Variation
Allows for a favorable trait for natural selection
Heritability
Traits can be passed from parent to offspring
Differential Survival
Difference in survival to reproductive age based on the condition of the trait
Differential Reproduction
Some individuals will have more breeding offspring than others
Fitness
The number of viable offspring you produce in your lifetime
Adaptation
A process by which individuals within a population acquire traits that increase their relative fitness
Artificial Selection
Organisms being selected and breeded because they have a desirable trait that can be passed down
Macroevolution
The change of one major taxonomic group into another
Homology
Similar traits in separate species due to a shared common ancestor
Vestigial Traits
Structures in organisms commonly found in the species that serve little or no function
Microevolution
The change in a population over generations that helps to separate populations from each other genetically.
