12 Endocrine System Flashcards
hormones
chemicals secreted by the glands of the endocrine system to regulate body functions
cells respond to hormones
only if they have receptors for that specific hormone
hypothalamus
master endocrine gland, secretes hormones that regulate the pituitary, together these two glands regulate all major body functions
anterior lobe of the pituitary gland
produces hormones that regulate growth and reproduction
human growth hormone
stimulates secretion of hormones that stimulate body growth and metabolism
primary endocrine organs
primary function is the secretion of hormones
secondary endocrine organs
secrete hormones and have other functions
parathyroid hormone
regulates calcium levels
thyroid gland location
in the neck, anterior to the trachea and inferior to the larynx
adrenal glands
a pair of endocrine glands that sit just above the kidneys and secrete hormones (epinephrine and norepinephrine) that help the body respond in times of stress
pineal gland
produces melatonin, which regulates sleeping patterns
pancreas
in addition to digestive functions, it secretes hormones that regulate blood glucose levels
ovaries
produce estrogen and progesterone
testes
produce testosterone
kidneys
secrete hormones stimulate red blood cell production, increase blood pressure, and increase calcium levels
