12: Calorimetry Flashcards
1
Q
What is calorimetry?
A
a method used to measure the energy transferred in chemical reactions
2
Q
Process of calorimetry
A
Fuel is put in spirit burner Spirit burner is weighed A copper container is filled with water Container clamped above spirit burner Temperature of water measured Wick it lit to warm water At end, spirit burner is weighed again and temperature also measured of water
3
Q
What is the copper container called?
A
Calorimeter
4
Q
Factors which affect the calorimetry experiment
A
Volume of water used
Starting temperature of water
Temperature change
5
Q
Equation for energy transfer
A
energy transferred (J) = mass of water heated(g) x 4.2 x temperature change (degrees)
6
Q
Equation for energy output of the fuel
A
energy per gram = energy supplied(J) / mass of fuel burnt(g)
