11.9 Flight Controls Flashcards
Primary control system operating methods
- Cable operated system
- boosted cable system
- hydraulic power operated system
- push pull rod system
- fly by wire system
- fly by light system
Trim?
Keeps flight controls in position
Artificial feel?
Makes controls proportional to loads so pilot doesnt over comtrol
In event of hydraulic system failure what is used
Servo tabs
Roll and yaw trimming
Trim tabs used for roll and yaw trimming
Pitch trimming
Trimmed by adjusting position of leading edge of horizontal stabiliser
Mach trim compensation?
Compensates the pitch down tendency at high speed
High lift devices?
- Trailing edge flaps ( increase area and camber. Increase angle of attack)
- Leading edge flaps (2 positions extended or retracted)
- Slats (3 positions, fully extened , fully retracted of partially extended)
Spoiler and speed brake system
- spoilers “spoil lift”
- flight spoilers and ground spoilers
- flight spoilers help ailersons in lateral movement
- speed brake- work symmetrically during a brake
Artificial feel system
- needed when hydraulic actuator used
* prevent over control from pilot
Stall protection system
- system consists of warning, and prevention mechanism
* prevention lowers angle of attack
Rudder travel limiter
- large aircraft need it
* protects tail from overload at high speed
Active stability systems
•provide stability during flight
…..yaw damper( prevents dutch roll )
Fly-by wire system
•uses electrical wires to connect flight control surfaces to cockpit
Fly-by light system
- uses fibre optic cables rather than wires
* susceptible to EMI
