11.3.5 Nacelles And Pylons Flashcards
What is a nacelle
Entire engine cowling system which includes nose cowl, hinged removable cowl panels, exhaust nacelle and thrust reverser
Functions of nacelle
- Smooth airflow around and into engine
- prevent engine damage
- gives additional strength to engine structure
- permit serice door access
Hinged cowling
- Usually quick release latches
* Divided into 2 sections: cold section and hot section
Function of hot section
• fire protection
Plyons
•connects engine to wing
Where are pylons mounted
Under wing or or at rear fuselage
Functions of pylon
- Enable routing and attachments of systems with the engine
* serves as fire barrier between engine and aircraft structure
Pylon primary section function
Carrys the loads
What are firewalls made of
Stainless steel and titanium
Or thermoplastics
Function of fire seal
- Prevent entry of combustible matter into areas where ignition may occur
- contains fire in one area
Engine mounts
• are failsafe due to multiple load paths
3 engine attachment configurations used to transport aircraft
- wing mounted
- tail side mounted
- tail mounted

What loads must engine mounts be able to carry
Side , vertical, thrust, and torque loads
What are stub wings
Side pylons
