most common STD?
chlamydia- intracellular parasite- 70% asymptomatic
what causes chlamydia? and what does it affect in both men and women?
bacteria- Chlamydia trachomatis. In women, chlamydial infection usually affects the neck of the womb (cervix) and the womb (uterus). In men, it usually affects the pipe through which urine is passed (the urethra) in the penis.
tests for chlamydia?
urine sample, swab from the cervix
meds for chlamydia?
azithromycin (favored because one-
time treatment, Azithromycin 1 g PO single dose) or doxycycline (100 mg PO bid x 7 d)
if chlamydia has symptoms when do they appear?
2-6 weeks after infection
MOA of azithromycin? what family of AB is it?
it is a macrolide
inhibit protein synthesis by blocking translocation
DDx of vaginal discharge in?
gonorrhea, salpingitis, local (chemical irritants),
neoplasia (vulvar, vaginal, cervical, endometrial),
systemic (TSS, Crohns)
IUD, OCP (secondary to progesterone)
symptoms of chlamydia?
dyspareunia, dysuria, frequency, no bacteria on culture, pelvic pain,
Co-infection of chlamydia?
gonorrhea, therefore must treat this also

another antibiotic used for chlamydia treatment?
Tetracyclines- doxycycline, minocycline
not to be used in pregnancy!!!
