11.6 Flashcards
Using up the Earth’s natural resources in this way cannot continue indefinitely because it is not
Sustainable
Waste management is a serious issue because when something is thrown away:
Raw materials, time and energy used to make it are lost
More raw materials, time and energy must be used to make a replacement and the environment must cope with the waste
It is not being valued as a resource
What sets out the main options for the management of waste?
The waste hierarchy
The waste hierarchy is the primary tool for assessing the
‘Best Practical Environmental Option’ (BPEO) for waste management
The BPEO is the option which provides the
Most benefit or least damage to the environment as a whole, at an acceptable cost in both the long and short term
The options within the waste hierarchy are presented on a sliding scale with the most sustainable option first and the least sustainable
Last
Order of waste hierarchy from best to worst:
Reduce/waste prevention Reuse Recycle/compost Energy recovery Disposal
1) waste should be prevented or reduced at
Source
2) waste materials should be
reused
3) waste materials should be recycled and
Used as a raw material
4) waste that cannot be reused should be used as a
Substitute for non-renewable energy sources
5) only waste which cannot be treated in any of the above ways should
Go to the landfill
The waste hierarchy has provided a national framework in the UK for the:
Introduction of a landfill tax
Setting of national recycling and recovery targets
Encouragement of energy recovery schemes
