Attatchment
emotional bond betweeb infant and caregiver as there is a physical dependency of human infant on an adult caregiver
Types of infant attachment
Secure attachment: children freely explore (w/ stranger) as long as their caregiver is present. Returns to caregiver for support / reassurance.
Insecure attachment:
- avoidant
- anxious-ambivalent
- disorganized
Avoidant attachment
- did not seem distressed with their mother leaving the room
- comforted by stranger
- did not immediately approach her upon return
Anxious-ambivalent
- never comfortable
- distressed when she left
- clingy and rejecting when returned
Disorganized attachment
- seemed confused
- not well attached
Parenting behavior => secure attachment
=> teaches them the world is a predictable place
- parents that respond to their children’s needs (shows them they will be there for them)
- children feel free (fosters independence) to explore their environment as they know their parents will be there
Parenting behavior => insecure attachment
=> teaches them the world is an unpredictable place
- parents are unresponsive or inconsistent
- they may not be there for them
- children do not venture far from the parent (clinginess and constant demand for attention)
Role of culture / society in attachment style
Secure attachment for stable societies
Insecure attachment styles for dangerous societies (prepare the child, kind of)
