not being able to find the level of intimacy => may alienate others due to loneliness rather than promote intimacy
How to have successful intimacy? establish a solid identity in adolescence
physical change in midlife for women
menopause.
menstruation stops => early 50s, loss of fertility
men: little to no decrease in testosterone, still have reproductive status
Social changes in midlife: empty nesters
- varies by culture
- more relaxed, improved marital relationship
- pursue career
Physical late adulthood: brain changes
age 45: weight of brain begins to decrease, not even in structures (eg hippocampus and prefrontal white matter)
[assuming good health] the effects of aging physically are more gradual
cognition late adulthood: memory
episodic declines gradually
vs semantic memory: increase gradually from midlife until early late adulthood, then decreases in very late adulthood
Social / emotion: integrity or despair
late adulthood
- reflection
- happy with life experience => generally integrity
=> opposite leads to despair
need for social connection: friendship, relationships w their children and grandchildren
