11.3 Representing the Formulae of Organic Compounds Flashcards
Chapter 11 - Basic Concepts of Organic Chemistry
What is meant by molecular formulae?
The formula that shows the number and type of atoms of each element present in a molecule.
What is the molecular formula of an alcohol?
CnH2n+2O
What is meant by empirical formulae?
The formula that shows the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms of each element present in a molecule.
What is meant by general formula?
The simplest algebraic formula for any member of a homologous series. Eg, CnH2n+2 for alkanes, CnH2n for alkenes.
What is the general formula of an alcohol?
CnH2n+1OH
What is the displayed formula?
A formula showing the relative positioning of all the atoms in a molecule and the bonds between them.
What is the structural formula?
A formula showing the minimal detail for the arrangement of atoms in a molecule.
What is the skeletal formula?
A simplified organic formula, with hydrogen atoms removed from alkyl chains, leaving just a carbon skeleton and associated functional groups.
