11.1 Organic Chemistry Flashcards
Chapter 11 - Basic Concepts of Organic Chemistry
What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound containing carbon and hydrogen only.
What is a meant by saturated?
Containing single bonds only.
What is meant by unsaturated?
Containing a multiple carbon-carbon bond.
What is a saturated hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon with single bonds only.
What is an unsaturated hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon with carbon-carbon multiple bonds.
What is a homologous series?
A series of organic compounds with the same functional group but with each successive member differing by the addition of a -CH2.
What is an alkane?
The hydrocarbon homologous series with single carbon-carbon bonds and the general formula: CnH2n+2.
What is a functional group?
The part of the organic molecule responsible for its chemical reactions.
What are the bond angles around the carbon in alkanes?
109.5°
