11.2 Nomenclature of Organic Compounds Flashcards
Chapter 11 - Basic Components of Organic Chemistry
What is meant by aliphatic?
Carbon atoms joined together in straight, or branched chains or non-aromatic rings.
What is meant by alicyclic?
Carbon atoms joined together in a ring structure that is not aromatic, with or without branches.
What is meant by aromatic?
Carbon atoms joined together in one or more benzene ring(s).
What is an alkane?
Hydrocarbon containing single carbon-carbon bonds.
What is an alkene?
Hydrocarbon containing at least one double carbon-carbon bond.
What is an alkyne?
Hydrocarbon containing at least one triple carbon-carbon bond.
What is the stem of the name when naming organic compounds?
Indicates the number of carbon atoms in the longest continuous chain in the molecule.
What is the prefix of the name when naming organic compounds?
Indicates the presence of side chains or a functional group.
What is the suffix of the name when naming organic compounds?
Indicates functional groups.
What is an alkyl group?
A side chain formed by removing the hydrogen atom from an alkane parent chain. Eg, CH3, C2H5.
What chain is considered the longest chain when there are two or more possible chains of the same length in a molecule?
The chain with the most branches.
