113. Environmental Awareness Flashcards
Define HAZMAT.
A hazardous material is defined as a material having one or more of the following characteristics:
- flashpoint < 200 F, harmful gases & vapors, poisonous to ingest, causes 1st degree burns to skin or is systematically toxic by skin contact, is radioactive; or
the item has special characteristics which in the opinion of the manufacturer could cause harm to personnel if used or stored improperly.
Define MSDS.
A form containing the identical data elements, must be used by manufacturers of chemical products to communicate to users the chemical, physical, and hazardous properties of their product to comply with the OSHA Standards.
What are the general procedures to be followed when a HAZMAT spill is discovered?
Discovery and Notification Initiation of Action Evaluation Containment and Damage Control Dispersion of Gases/Vapors Cleanup and Decontamination Disposal of Contaminated Materials Certification for Re-entry Follow-up Reports
State the PPE required when handling HAZMAT/HAZWASTE.
The best means of protecting personnel from hazard exposure in the workplace is to eliminate the hazard. When this is not possible, engineering controls shall be the method of choice to eliminate or minimize hazard exposure in the workplace. When neither of these methods can be employed, activities shall implement a personal protective equipment (PPE) program to reduce or eliminate personnel exposure to hazards.
Commands will provide specific PPE related to hazards and potential exposures since each hazardous material may possess unique PPE requirements.
