1.11 - Sin and salvation Flashcards
Define Sin
Sin is any action or thought that separates humans from God, that is, an action or thought against God’s laws and wishes or against the principles of morality God requires His people to follow.
Many Sinful actions are also what?
Against the law in many countries.
However, some aren’t. But according to Christians this doesn’t mean?
Just because some, such as adultery, aren’t against the law, it doesn’t mean they are right and acceptable.
Christians believe what about humanity?
All humans sin. Nobody is perfect, other than Jesus.
Some Christians also believe in the idea of what?
original sin
What is original sin?
It suggests human beings are born with an in-built tendency to do wrong
Where does the idea of original sin come from?
Adam and Eve . They ate the fruit after being tempted by a serpent. They sinned against God’s word. This introduced sin to the world. This separated them from God and made them die.
Who is the serpent which tempts Adam and Eve?
The Devil, who is seen as a major force of Evil.
All humans are tempted to do bad things against what God would want. Many give in. But where is the origin of temptation?
The Devil. They are a fallen angel who went against God and tempted Adam and Eve.
Christians believe God gave humans what?
Free will to choose how they live their lives.
However free will does not mean what?
People can do whatever they like. If people use their free will on choices that God wouldn’t approve of, they are sinful and will separate the person from God.
What does Salvation mean?
To be saved from Sin and the consequences of it and be granted eternal life with God. Salvation enables people to get close to God again after sin.
What’s one way someone can achieve salvation?
By having faith in God and obeying God’s law by doing good deeds.
What’s another way?
Through grace and faith in Jesus. It is not earned or deserved, but a gracious gift from God.
